WHAT IS LINEAGE ZEN?The Great Enlightenment and Compassion of the Buddha has been transmitted to lineage masters throughout human history. Buddha means "Enlightenment" or "Enlightened Being." The focus of Lineage Zen is to learn Buddha's enlightened mind through the practice of Hwa Du (Kong An). It does not depend on words, phrases, principles, dogmas, sutras or written scriptures, but focuses on attaining the true nature of all beings directly. We call this method "mind-to-mind" teaching. This mind-to-mind teaching is the core teaching of Korean Buddhist Chogye Order and is now being spread throughout the world by lineage masters. We also re-and cross-examine the true heart of the great sages of all religions through the peaceful practice of Zen. ABOUT CENTERThe Hwagyesa International Zen Center is located in the Hwagysa Temple which sits at the foot of the beautiful Samgakshan Mountain in the North of Seoul. It is part of the Chogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and has been the home to many Korean lineage Zen masters and teachers such as Zen Master Man Gong, Hye Am, Chun Sung, Ko Bong, Jeok Eum and Dok Sahn. Hwagyesa Temple was built in 1522 by Zen Master Shin Wol.Zen Master Seung Sahn (1927-1994), who is the disciple of Zen Master Ko Bong and the founder of Kwan Um Zen School for westerners in 1984, opened the sitting room ten years later so that people from all over the world can practice together and find their true nature. Our center helps practitioners to clarify practicing methods and to achieve the freedom from life and death. Residents at the Zen Center practice from morning to evening and do various jobs around the temple during the day. Anyone who wants to learn the core teachings of Korean Zen is encouraged to join resident and visiting nuns and monks in practice during three-month summer and winter retreats. Hwagyesa International Zen Center is also open to all practitioners between retreats. It is also possible to participate in group retreats and temple stay.
